The reporter includes four copies of GAL4 upstream activation sequence (UAS), a minimal 35S promoter (TATA box included), and a luciferase reporter gene. The effectors contain the GAL4 DNA-binding domain with AtDB5 (negative control) or with AtWRKY29 (positive control) or GhREVs under the control of the 35S promoter. b Relative luciferase activity of GhREVs in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Reporter and effector constructs were co-expressed in 10-day-old Arabidopsis protoplasts; and luciferase activity was measured 12 h after transfection. The data are shown as mean ± SD from three independent repeats (n = 3). The above experiments were repeated three times with similar results
